SUGAR MOON
Sugar Moon released their debut EP, Special Shade of Blue, June 28, 2020. Recorded at Vermillion Road Studio in Longmont, the album consists of seven previously unreleased tracks. Sugar Moon’s core duo, Elli Gauthier Varas (vocals, guitar, musical saw) and Kyra Holt (vocals, banjo, fiddle), are joined by Eric Wiggs, who’s subtle additions with the bass, mandolin, and dobro add depth and balance to the sound. Together, Sugar Moon is the perfect acoustic brew, with Special Shade of Blue proving to be a welcome IPA: strong, earthy, and bittersweet.
As part of the Colorado bluegrass scene, Sugar Moon is also unique in their makeup: the core duo are both women, and in such a male-dominated genre their music is undeniably feminine — both in the musical aesthetic and lyrical themes. Gaining momentum up and down the front range, they were finalists in the Ullrgrass Band Competition, and have been featured on KCFR’s “Locally Sourced” radio program.
Sugar Moon came to life in 2017, growing from the members' shared love for both traditional bluegrass and original songwriting.
“The bluegrass duo Sugar Moon is a rising star on the Front Range folk scene, and the reason for the pair's popularity is clear on its first album, Special Shade of Blue, a collection of gorgeous songs backed with melancholy bluegrass instrumentation.”
